Roanoke is an independent city located in the state of Virginia. According to 2010 census, the citys population is about 97,032. Roanoke which is considered the largest city in Southwest Virginia used to be known as Big Lick. The city is the 5th most-populous municipality in Virginia.

The city used to be home to the ABA team Virginia Squires between 1971 and 1972. And it was the only main league sports team to frequently play their games in the city. The minor hockey team Roanoke Express used to be based in the city before it was folded up in 2003-04 season. The Roanoke Valley Vipers played one season in 2005-06 but failed to revive interest of fan base. The college ice hockey team Virginia Tech Hokies has played its games in Roanoke Civic Center starting from 2006 until the present time. Over years, the city has embraced different sports including soccer, arena football, basketball and a lot more.

Several cultural sites are available in the city like the museums. For instance the Center in the Square has a museum that exhibits artifacts and things that feature the history of the region. The center also has a library, a Science museum, history museum and other sections. The city also is headquarters to the Virginia Museum of Transportation that shows the locomotives that were built in the city such as Norfolk & Western 1218 and other steam engines.
